123 Color HD: Talking Coloring Book (by: 123 Apps)
Price (as of 12/5/11): $0.99 for lite version, $8.99 for full version

This is a fun coloring book app for kids. If you buy the full version there are 14 different coloring books to choose from. The lite version has about 8 books. Kids can color using their finger or a stylus pen. There are 4 ways to color a picture - by matching upper case letters, lower case letters, or numbers, and by picking your own colors. When picking your own colors, you can choose to allow marks to go out of the lines or not. The settings allow you to limit color and coloring book choices if you have a student who needs fewer choices.

Functional Skills:
  • Fine motor - finger isolation and prewriting skills
  • Matching letters, numbers, or colors
Art of Glow (by: Natenai Ariyatrakool)
Price (as of 12/5/11): Free

This is basically a paint app. Kids "paint" on a black screen. Unlike most paint apps, the strokes are animated. You can change the shape and color of the paintbrush. You can also change the animation settings. I use it a lot with writing letters or names. I've also used it with kids who have low vision. With the lights turned off it's like writing with light!

Functional Skills:
  • Fine motor - finger isolation and prewriting
  • Cause and effect

Heydooda! Dot to Dot (by: zeec GmbH)
Price (as of 3/8/12): Free, does include additional game sets you can buy with an in app purchase.

This is a fairly simple dot-to-dot game. The dots pulsate to help guide you to connect them in sequence. When you connect all the dots you are shown a cute and kid friendly picture. It can be a little tricky for some kids because if you don't get close enough to the dot your line doesn't stay.

Functional Skills:
  • Fine motor - finger isolation, prewriting
  • Visual perceptual - sequencing the dots
 More Pie (by: Maverick Software)

I got this simply because I like making pie :). In this app you use your fingers to roll out your pie dough, cut and trim it, mix the fillings, bake or freeze, decorate, slice, and eat!

  • Finger isolation and using two fingers together
  • Pointing and tapping
  • Prewriting (drawing/scribbling, drawing horizontal, vertical, and curved lines)
Paint Sparkles Draw - my first colors HD (by: Kids Games Club)

Another paint app! When you paint there are animated sparkles on the screen that fade away. One nice thing about this app is when you touch a color to paint with it speaks the name of the color.

Functional Skills:
  • Isolating one finger
  • Prewriting/drawing
Slide and Spin (by: My First App)

This app has four "switches" (a button, a vertical slider, a horizontal slider, and a circle slider). When you activate a switch, an image appears in the box above the switch along with a sound. You can record your own reinforcement sounds to use. On the circle slider it only works if you do a half circle (not a full circle).
